A 55-year-old Montgomery man and a 16-month-old infant were killed after their vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler and then hit another vehicle Friday on Interstate 85.

Roberto Linares, 55, of Montgomery, and the 16-month-old from Hapeville, Georgia, were both passengers of a 2001 Toyota Sienna traveling north on I-85 about 2 miles north of Shorter about 6:30 p.m., said Cpl. Jesse Thornton, a state trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The Toyota was hit by a 2011 Freightliner tractor-trailer, which sent the Toyota into a 2014 Ford Focus. Three other passengers in the Toyota were transported to a hospital with injuries.

While the baby was in a car seat, Linares was not wearing a seat belt, Thornton said.

After that crash, another collision on a bridge occurred near the wreck also on the northbound side. The roadway support system was damaged and will be closed between the 2 and 26 mile markers until bridge repairs can be made. One lane remains open.
