The recent Buckmasters Expo in Montgomery has been deemed a success.

More than 20,000 people recently went to the Montgomery Convention Center. The 23rd annual Expo was billed as “the largest hunting sale ever.”

“I saw a bunch of familiar faces, along with a sea of new ones,” said Jackie Bushman, founder of the national whitetail deer hunting organization headquartered in Montgomery. “I think it’s because of the family-friendly atmosphere. There’s something for everyone here, not just for moms and dads. Although exhibitors offer super deals on gear for the upcoming hunting season, there’s much more to do here than spend money.”

Admission to the expo was one can of food, or a $1 donation, split between the Salvation Army and Friendship Mission. The food collected and money raised at the doors will allow these agencies to serve approximately 150,000 meals to the homeless and poor, according to a release from Buckmasters.

“Last weekend’s togetherness warmed my heart,” said Tina Golson with the Salvation Army’s Montgomery office. “Everyone gave so abundantly in different ways, a complete circle of caring love for our neighbors during these harsh economic times.”

And the praise continued.

“Buckmasters is a true blessing,” said Tammy Middleton, executive director for Friendship Mission. “Last year’s food collection sustained us for an entire year for both our shelters. We provide more than 12,000 meals a month, and this program allows us to continue each year.”

Another expo highlight is the Buckmasters Top Bow Indoor World Championship. Each year, the country’s best archers converge on Montgomery in a quest for the Top Bow title. Four days of intense competition whittle down the shooters until two finalists go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon. The 2016 Top Bow champion and $15,000 prize winner is Alex Ballenger of North Carolina.

The Buckmasters Top Bow finals are filmed and will be aired on Outdoor Channel as part of this season’s “Buckmasters” TV show. Buckmasters was excited to partner with the Alabama Extension System (ACES) 4-H program, introducing the Alabama 4-H Buckmasters Championship Shoot-Off. This competition was held at Montgomery’s Multiplex downtown. The top six shooters from the junior and senior division shot on the Buckmasters Top Bow range on Sunday to crown a champion in each division.

“The partnership between Alabama Extension and Buckmasters is an opportunity to provide today’s sportsmen with scientific information on wildlife management, and the 4-H Tournament helps create tomorrow’s leaders in the field,” said Dr. Gary Lemme, Alabama Extension director.

Families at the expo also enjoyed the Harriott II Riverboat attraction, which gave free cruises to about 1,000 expo attendees.
