WETUMPKA – A female inmate was found dead Wednesday morning in the Elmore County Jail, said Sheriff Bill Franklin.

Dianna Marie Layne, 39, of Pell City was found unresponsive in her cell at about 6:20 a.m., he said. She was in a cell by herself.

"Our staff had contact with her about 6:07 a.m.," Franklin said. "They asked her if she was going to eat her breakfast. About 15 minutes later, they checked on her again and she was unresponsive.

"Jail staff called for medical assistance, but Ms. Layne had in fact expired."

Her body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy, he said.

Layne was brought to the jail Friday evening by Poarch Creek Tribal Police, Franklin said. She had been arrested at the Wind Creek Casino in Wetumpka on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, he said. She was allegedly in possession of 22 morphine pills, he said.
