AUBURN -- The biggest recruiting weekend in program history delivered its first commitment on Sunday as Auburn flipped four-star athlete Tim Irvin from Texas.

Irvin was among a large contingent of players taking official visits to the Plains this weekend and informed Auburn coach Gus Malzahn of his decision Sunday morning.

"I told him I felt like it was comfortable," Irvin said. "It was a nice place. When I first came on the campus I felt like the coaches and the players, they brought me in like I was their child so I felt like I was at home."

Irvin is expected to play defensive back at Auburn and wants to be at safety.

"I like hitting people," said Irvin, whose prior relationship with new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson was a factor in his decision to come to Auburn.

"Me and coach T-Rob, we had a great relationship," Irvin said. "We felt like we had a great bond over the years so I wanted to play for him. ...

"I talked to them almost every day. They told me my positives and my negatives. Most coaches didn't tell me about my positives and negatives. ... Positive they say I'm great at covering ability, I bring physical, I'm good at tackling and doing what I do. Negative, they say I'm stiff; I can work on my techniques."

The Miami native said he spoke with Texas coach Charlie Strong Saturday night and informed him of his decommitment.

"He said do what's best for me, go somewhere where you feel comfortable," Irvin said. "He wasn't mad at all."

The addition of Irvin, which was first reported by 247Sports, gives Auburn 21 commitments to its 2015 class, which moved up to No. 9 in Scout's rankings, No. 10 for 247Sports and No. 11 for Rivals.

Irvin, who had never been to Auburn's campus before this weekend, is expected to be an early enrollee and said he will return to campus Tuesday morning to start classes Wednesday.

"I'm going to bring a lot of toughness, a lot of strength, a lot of ability covering wise," Irvin said. " feel like I'm going to be a good impact my freshman year."
