AUBURN -- Backup center Matthew Atewe is transferring from the Auburn basketball program, a source confirmed.

ESPN first reported Atewe's departure.

A 6-foot-8 230 pound center, Atewe missed last season due to a slow recovery from leg surgery in November, reopening a stress fracture, which he played through during the 2013-14 season, in Auburn's exhibition win over West Alabama on Nov. 7.

He averaged just 1.5 points and 3.4 rebounds while appearing in 24 games as a true freshman.

Though he would not have played, Atewe did not attend this month's SEC Tournament.

Auburn has only Cinmeon Bowers and Trayvon Reed returning as scholarship centers.
