AUBURN -- The Auburn secondary suffered a blow as T.J. Davis suffered a torn ACL prior to spring break and will be out indefinitely.

Davis was not at practice Tuesday, Auburn's sixth of the spring, and coach Gus Malzahn said the hope is for the junior cornerback to return at some point in the fall.

"He had surgery before we left so that's a tough blow," Malzahn said. "We're hoping to get him back during the season. … He tore his ACL so we'll see where that is. He's determined to come back."

Davis, who had six tackles last season, was taking reps with the second-team defense and expected to be the third cornerback behind Jonathan Jones and Josh Holsey as well as contribute on special teams.

"It's very unfortunate," Malzahn said. "He was making some progress at defensive back and he was one of our better special team players too. He'll do everything he can to get back."

The severity of Davis' tear is unknown, though Carl Lawson sustained his ACL injury at the end of spring last year and missed the whole season.

Kamryn Melton and walk-on Michael Sherwood are the next corners on the depth chart after Davis.
