AUBURN -- Being on the scout team is not a glamorous job.

The largely thankless task of helping the starting and offense and defense get ready for each week's opponent is usually reserved for players who are redshirting and walk-ons.

Auburn has the unusual luxury of having two transfers, safety Tray Matthews and offensive lineman Austin Golson, who started in the SEC last season at Georgia and Ole Miss, respectively, to help on scout team this year.

"I think there's some value in that, there's no doubt, just with their ability," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "When you're going scout groups and all that, if you can give a good look up front, I think that's very critical. And Austin definitely has that ability."

Matthews had 36 tackles and an interception in eight games, including six starts, for the Bulldogs.

Golson, a native of Prattville, started 12 games for the Rebels last season. He worked with the second-team offensive line early in fall camp, before an injury forced him to miss a few early practices.

Neither Matthews or Golson have been available for interviews.
